Mr. Roebuck

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) how many officers and men were employed on the blasting of Beaucette Quarry on Guernsey to make it suitable for development as a yachting marina ; and what was the total of their pay and allowances for the period spent on this work ;

(2) with what company his Department entered into a contract for the blasting of Beaucette Quarry on Guernsey ; what was his Department's estimate for the work, excluding pay and allowances ; what was the, actual cost of the work ; and what sum has been received from the company.

Mr. Hattersley

An average of 2 officers and 40 men were employed on this project. Their pay and allowances during this period of their training amounted to £27,000.

The work was performed on behalf of Vale Investments Ltd. On the basis of the original estimate the cost would have totalled about £2,300; the final costs were £5,910. The basis of final settlement is still under discussion with the firm.
