HC Deb 03 November 1969 vol 790 cc24-5W
62. Dr. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the total number of people in the United Kingdom entitled to diplomatic privileges including exemption from fines for traffic offences; what categories of persons are so entitled and in what numbers; and if United Kingdom nationals acting as drivers are so included in their own right.

Mr. Luard

7,323 persons enjoy varying degrees of diplomatic immunity and consequently cannot be compelled to pay fines for traffic offences.

This figure includes 4,197 members of the staffs of foreign and Commonwealth diplomatic missions; 611 persons connected with international organisations. 2,515 wives share their husbands' immunity. Families forming part of the households of certain officials enjoy similar immunity.

The above figures include only two United Kingdom citizens acting as drivers.
