HC Deb 09 May 1969 vol 783 c148W
Mr. Gresham Cooke

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will give an assurance that the Concorde when making fully commercial flights from Heathrow will not be permitted to make supersonic bangs except over the sea.

Mr. William Rodgers

In Section 19 of the Civil Aviation Act, 1968, the Government have taken powers to restrict or prohibit civil supersonic flying over the United Kingdom. No decision has yet been taken on the extent to which these powers should be used. Concorde cannot, however, attain supersonic speed until about 100 miles after take-off and must reduce to a subsonic speed about 100 miles before touch down.
