HC Deb 02 May 1969 vol 782 cc296-7W
Mr. William Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many young men under 21 years of age are now held on remand in Winson Green Prison; and what was the date when the longest detained of these was first held in Winson Green Prison.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

On 25th April, 1969, one young man was awaiting trial. He had been detained at Birmingham prison since 5th April. Thirteen who had been convicted were awaiting sentence, four of them since 24th March.

Mr. William Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why young men under 21 years of age are detained in Winson Green Prison rather than in Brockhill Remand Home.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

The accommodation for young men at Brockhill remand centre is full, but most of the young men under 21 in Birmingham prison are not on remand, but have been sentenced to borstal training or imprisonment and are awaiting transfer to a borstal allocation centre or a young prisoners' centre.
