HC Deb 02 May 1969 vol 782 c310W
Mr. Farr

asked the Minister of Transport what is the approximate number of speed limit signs which will need conversion on decimalisation; and what steps he plans to take to make it possible for these to be observed without the replacement of vehicle speedometers.

Mr. Marsh

In England about 280,000 signs will need to be altered. By 1973, when the change is made, many newer vehicles will have metric speedometers. The metric equivalents will be simple to learn but I intend to discuss with the industry the production of conversion stickers for speedometers on other vehicles.
