asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will now give details about the Arts Council's national inquiry into British orchestras, including its membership and terms of reference.

Miss Jennie Lee

The terms of reference of the inquiry will be as followsTo consider and make recommendations for the development and financing of the professional orchestral resources of Great Britain, with particular reference to

  1. 1. public concert-giving, especially outside London,
  2. 2. broadcasting, television and recording,
  3. 3. opera and ballet requirements,
  4. 4. training of young musicians, and
  5. 5. the relationship of contemporary repertoire and the living composer to financial considerations.
The membership of the inquiry has yet to be decided, and no invitations have as yet been issued by the Arts Council.
