Commander Pursey

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) why a nurse at the Children's Convalescent Home at Hornsea, Yorkshire, listened in to a mother's conversation with her son, with the object of making a report to the sister; and why the sister gave the mother the report to read when she prematurely took her son away from the Home;

(2) what action is to be taken at the Children's Convalescent Home at Hornsea, Yorkshire, to stop children being sworn at, having things thrown at them, and, if they happen to do something wrong, having to sit on the cold pot of the toilet.

My hon. Friend has sent me two letters containing these allegations. With his permission I will refer them for investigation by the Committee of Inquiry which is being set up by the Leeds Regional Hospital Board.

aware that the mother of a boy who was at the Children's Convalescent Home at Hornsea, Yorkshire, has recently written to the Hospital Management Committee complaining that more than one child was bathed in the same bath water; and what is the present number of children bathed in the same water.

Yes. This allegation will be investigated by the Committee of Inquiry.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will state the number of nurses who have this year walked out of the Children's Convalescent Home at Hornsea, Yorkshire, on the grounds of the treatment of children by the sister.

Mr. Crossman

One state enrolled nurse and three nursing auxiliaries have left the hospital during 1969 but none gave this reason for leaving.
