HC Deb 24 March 1969 vol 780 c197W
54. Mr. Roebuck

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what are his plans for the official celebration of Commonwealth Day; and what sums have been allocated for this purpose.

Mr. Whitlock

The Joint Commonwealth Societies' Council has assumed the major responsibility for the celebration here of Commonwealth Day and has arranged a Multi-Faith Act of Witness to take place in the Guildhall on Saturday, 14th June in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Kent. Copies of Her Majesty's Commonwealth Day Message will be distributed throughout Britain and the Commonwealth and a grant of £500 has been provided for these purposes.

In addition Commonwealth flags will be flown on the approach to Horse Guards Parade on the occasion of the Trooping the Colour at a cost of about £1,800, which will be met from official funds.
