HC Deb 24 March 1969 vol 780 cc208-9W
Mr. Fortescue

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what means of communication with general practitioners he uses in an emergency;

(2) what steps were taken by his Department to warn general practitioners that the anti-measles vaccine Wellcovax had been withdrawn by the manufacturers.

Mr. Crossman

The Chief Medical Officer's letter of 17th March informed Medical Officers of Health of local authorities that the manufacturers were advising immediate suspension of the use of this vaccine, and asked Medical Officers of Health to inform practitioners to whom the vaccine had been distributed.

The method of communication in emergency depends on the circumstances. Radio, press or letter may be used, and the help of manufacturers, Executive Councils or local health authorities enlisted.
