HC Deb 21 March 1969 vol 780 c163W
Mr. Whitaker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will give an assurance that no public money will be spent on athletes going to South Africa to take part in the forthcoming games there; and what advice he has given to such athletes.

Mr. Denis Howell

I have repeatedly stated that Government grant is not available for any British participation in sporting events in South Africa. The athletes in question were invited as individuals and they have the same freedom to travel abroad as any other British subject. No advice was asked for.
