HC Deb 21 March 1969 vol 780 c182W
Mr. Bessell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will authorise opticians to dispense without charge spectacles with toughened glass under the National Health Service for children under the age of 14 years.

Mr. Crossman

Normally the risk of injury from spectacle lenses does not justify the use of toughened glass. Where there is a clinical need for such lenses they can be supplied through the Hospital Eye Service free of charge.
