§ Mr. Whitakerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in order to prevent further escapes from Metropolitan Police vans, he will arrange for them to have a lock which can only be opened by the police or by the driver, and also consider the building of remand centres adjacent to the major criminal trial courts.
§ Mr. CallaghanThe vehicles in question can be locked, and instructions have been given that this should be done in future. I recognise the advantages of the suggestion in the second part of the Question, but the difficulty of obtaining sites makes it impracticable in most places.
