§ Mr. CallaghanSection 29 of the Police Act, 1964, empowers me to require a police authority to call upon a chief constable to retire in the interests of efficiency. The Chief Constable of Durham has recently uttered some highly coloured personal views about putting criminals to death. I completely dissociate myself from these views. But this matter is not his professional concern and in this respect I have no reason to suppose that the discharge of his official duties will be affected. The answer to the Question is therefore, "No".
