HC Deb 24 June 1969 vol 785 cc256-7W
Captain Kerby

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many female Commonwealth citizens have sought entry into the United Kingdom in the last five years claiming to be the second, third or fourth wife of an immigrant already resident in this country; and how many women claiming such polygamous marital status have been admitted to this country during that period.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

Separate records are not kept for wives by polygamous marriage. The number admitted is small.

Mr. Winnick

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many male Commonwealth citizens have so far this year applied to come to the United Kingdom to join their wives or fiancées; what number have been given permission to enter; and if he will state the figures for 1968 and 1969 of female Commonwealth citizens who came to Great Britain to join husbands or fiancés or who were given permission to do so.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

During the first five months of 1969, 217 men have been admitted for marriage. In 1968, 1,916 women were admitted for marriage, and in the first five months of this year 858. I regret that the other information asked for is not available.
