§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that some local authorities have substantial outstanding loan charges mainly caused by debts incurred as a result of the war and in clearing private landlords' slum houses to build new homes for the people; and, as the high interest rates are adversely affecting these authorities in their efforts, if he will seek powers to relieve them of this burden or to assist them in overcoming their financial problems.
§ Mr. Harold LeverThe local authorities already receive a substantial measure of relief from the effect of high interest rates through the Rate Support Grant and the housing subsidy.
