HC Deb 12 June 1969 vol 784 cc276-7W
37. Mr. Luard

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether, in accordance with the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly of December, 1968, he will issue a circular to local education authorities on the provision of instruction about the United Nations in schools.

Mr. Short

My Department has for a number of years issued a circular to encourage schools to commemorate United Nations Day and to study the work of the United Nations and other international organisations. The circular contains advice about sources of information. The forthcoming issues of the circular will refer to the General Assembly resolution, the text of which is going out as an Appendix.

39. Mr. Judd

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what action he is taking to encourage the study of international affairs to mark the 25th anniversary of the United Nations in 1970.

Mr. Short

In a circular shortly to be issued, I draw attention to the importance of the 25th anniversary of the United Nations and express the hope that schools will prepare for the occasion. I am consulting my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs about the content of a special communication to be sent to local education authorities and schools nearer the anniversary date.
