HC Deb 12 June 1969 vol 784 cc278-9W
42. Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many persons and organisations have made representations to him proposing an inquiry by Her Majesty's inspectors into all the circumstances at Guildford College of Art; if he will publish a list of the organisations; and what action he now proposes to take.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

Representations have been received from 184 persons and 37 organisations for a public or independent inquiry concerning Guildford School of Art, though not for an inquiry by Her Majesty's Inspectors. A further 2,509 persons have supported petitions in this connection. A list of the organisations concerned will be published in the OFFICIAL REPORT. These representations are mainly concerned with the question of the dismissal of staff. On this matter I have nothing to add to the reply I gave my hon. Friend on 30th April, none of my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State's powers or duties under the Education Acts is exerciseable in relation to the appointment and dismissal of teachers in maintained institutions of further education, who are appointed under the Local Government Acts.—[Vol. 782, c. 248–9.]
