HC Deb 25 July 1969 vol 787 c530W
Sir Richard Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many cases of capital murder under the Act of 1957 did the murderer or suspected murderer commit suicide.

Mr. Callaghan

From 21st March, 1957 to 8th November, 1965, the period during which the relevant provisions of the Homicide Act, 1957 were in operation, there were 68 offences of murder known to the police in England and Wales, appearing from the information furnished by the police to be capital, in which the suspect committed suicide before trial. No one convicted of capital murder recorded in the same period subsequently committed suicide.
