HC Deb 25 July 1969 vol 787 c513W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity whether, using as the basis official figures which are available to her Department, she will give details of the average expenditure spent on food by a husband, wife and three children per week; and what estimate she has made of the increase or reduction of this amount on the basis that the food prices are charged at the retail market prices in Germany, Italy, France and Holland, respectively, details of which are available from international sources.

Mr. Fernyhough

Estimates derived from the Family Expenditure Survey for 1967 indicate that in that year the average weekly expenditure on food of households consisting of one man, one woman and three or more children was about £8 5s. 0d. This figure is based on information provided by 591 households and is subject to sampling error.

With regard to the second part of the Question, no such estimates have been made.
