HC Deb 24 July 1969 vol 787 cc447-8W
Mr. A. Royle

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Rover 3.5 litre motor cars ordered by Departments under the Ministry of Defence contract have been delivered; and if he will list any defects that have become apparent caused by faulty workmanship or design, and the number of days that each car has been off the road due to rectification of faults.

Dr. David Owen

Since the introduction of the Rover 3.5 litre model in September, 1967, 42 have been ordered and delivered to departments under the Ministry of Defence contract.

The following defects have been reported and taken up with the manufacturer:

  • Fluid leaks on power steering;
  • Excessive wear of brake pads;
  • 448
  • Windscreen leaking;
  • Shock absorber mountings shearing;
  • Fuel system leakage;
and some other minor defects.

The contract under which the cars are supplied contains the customary guarantee clauses, which have been liberally interpreted by the manufacturer.

In the time available, it has not been possible to obtain details of the number of days each car has been off the road due to rectification of faults.
