HC Deb 24 July 1969 vol 787 cc495-6W
Mr. Henig

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if the Royal Mint will buy back demonetised coins at face value.

Mr. Taverne

After demonetisation a coin is no longer legal tender; no one, including the banks, is obliged to accept it as money. For this reason the Decimal Currency Board is strongly advising people to pay in such coins before they are demonetised, and long notice of the intention to demonetise has been given. However, the Royal Mint will be pre- pared to accept these coins from the banks at face value for a time after they have been demonetised.
