§ Mr. Gregoryasked the Minister of Technology what progress has been made by the Atomic Energy Authority and the Central Electricity Generating Board in the design study for a combined advanced gas-cooled nuclear reactor and distillation plant capable of producing 400 megawatts of electricity and 60 m.g.d. of water, including the costs of producing from such sources units of 1,000 gallons of water.
§ Mr. J. P. W. MallalieuThe Atomic Energy Authority undertook a design study in 1965, in collaboration with the Nuclear Power Group Limited for this specific size of plant. A more recent study undertaken by the Atomic Energy Authority and Central Electricity Generating Board was based on 2 x 600 MW(E) A.G.R. station linked with 4 x 10 m.g.d. desalination units; the cost of water produced by this plant was estimated at approximately 5s. per thousand gallons.
