§ 81. Mr. Maxwell-Hyslopasked the Minister of Transport if he will give the accident figures for the A38 between Wellington and Cullompton; whether he is satisfied with the positioning of road work warning signs on this stretch of road; what are the reasons for the high fatal accident rate; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Bob BrownIn the eighteen months from 1st January, 1968, to 30th June, 1969, there were 34 accidents involving personal injury on the twelve mile length of A38 between Wellington and Cullompton. Two of these accidents involved a total of four deaths. The fatal accident rate is below the national average for rural trunk roads.
A later regrettable accident occurred early on 12th July when four people were killed. The circumstances are still being investigated by the police and the hon. Member will therefore not expect me to comment.
