HC Deb 04 July 1969 vol 786 c162W
Sir Harmar Nicholls

asked the Minister of Transport how many accidents for the latest convenient period were caused by articulated trailer type lorries jackknifing; and what representations he has received that the licensing of such vehicles should be more closely controlled.

Mr. Marsh

This information is not available. But on the basis of earlier studies in particular areas, it is estimated that of 859 accidents involving articulated vehicles in February and March this year, about 10 per cent. may have had jackknifing as a contributory cause.

I have received no representations that the use of articulated vehicles should be more closely controlled, but trials are being carried out of devices which we hope will much reduce the phenomenom of jack-knifing.
