§ Mr. Whitakerasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) why the Government did not make a grant to enable the Oscott Lectern to be bought for a public museum so that it remained in this country, as recommended by the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art;
(2) why the Government did not make a grant to enable the recently available Caxton Manuscript to be bought by a public collection in this country, as recommended by the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art.
§ Miss Jennie LeeBecause of the need to contain public expenditure, the Government did not consider that they would be justified in making a special grant towards the purchase of these objects.
