HC Deb 20 January 1969 vol 776 c43W
Mr. Whitaker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) why the Government did not make a grant to enable the Oscott Lectern to be bought for a public museum so that it remained in this country, as recommended by the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art;

(2) why the Government did not make a grant to enable the recently available Caxton Manuscript to be bought by a public collection in this country, as recommended by the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art.

Miss Jennie Lee

Because of the need to contain public expenditure, the Government did not consider that they would be justified in making a special grant towards the purchase of these objects.
