§ 80. Mr. Ridsdaleasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the increase to date since October 1964 of employment in the public sector of Government; and what has been the increase or decrease to date of employment in the private sector of industry.
§ Mr. TaverneBetween mid-1964 and mid-1967 employment in the public sector (including the public corporations) increased by just over 200,000. In the same period employment in the private sector fell by over a quarter of a million. Definitions and further details were given in an article in the October 1968 issue of Economic Trends. Provisional figures for mid-1968 show a further increase of a quarter of a million in the public sector, nearly all of which is accounted for by the nationalisation of the iron and steel industry, 1968 figures for the private sector are not yet available.
