HC Deb 26 February 1969 vol 778 c327W
Mr. Ford

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is aware that the West Riding Education Authority is proposing to make economies by extending school holidays; and if he will give advice to local education authorities on his policy on this practice.

Mr. Edward Short

The Schools Regulations, 1959, provide that schools shall meet for at least 400 sessions in each school year. I understand that schools in the West Riding have for some years met for 406 sessions. The Authority has now decided to conform with what it understands to be the general practice and that its schools shall meet for 400 sessions only in future. I see no need to issue general advice.
