HC Deb 26 February 1969 vol 778 cc299-300W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will consider introducing legislation to prohibit the mutilation of livestock such as de-beaking of birds and docking of pigs practised as a means of combating vice due to stress by rearing conditions.

Mr. John Mackie

We have already announced our intention to introduce regulations to control pig docking, and to prohibit cattle docking except for veterinary reasons. The Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Committee is reviewing the welfare implications of other practices, and we await their advice.
