HC Deb 26 February 1969 vol 778 c320W
Mr. Clegg

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will approve the setting up of a transmitting station in the Fylde area which will give a complete coverage of British Broadcasting Corporation radio programmes and guarantee reception.

Mr. Stonehouse

The B.B.C. tells me that, provided efficient sets and aerials are used, Radio 2 should be satisfactorily received in the Fylde area on the long wave; Radio 3 and 4 on medium waves; and all three services on VHF. During hours of darkness, medium wave reception there, as elsewhere, is liable to interference from continental stations; and it is to provide a service free from this liability that the Corporation has built its network of VHF stations.

Fylde is situated towards the fringe of Radio 1 transmission area. It was recognised from the outset that, during the day, this area would not include much more than 80 per cent. of the population of the United Kingdom.

The B.B.C. has no plan to build a transmitting station in the Fylde area.
