HC Deb 25 February 1969 vol 778 cc242-4W
Mr. Judd

asked the Minister of Overseas Development whether he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT details of Great Britain's capital and technical assistance programmes in Tunisia in each of the past five years and the proposed programme for the financial year 1969–70.

Mr. Prentice

Britain has not given any capital aid to Tunisia in the past five years. Some technical assistance has been provided, mainly for the El Fouladh Steelworks. Annual disbursements under the technical assistance programme are as follows:

2. In recent discussions with the Tunisian Government, we offered to provide capital aid of £50,000 a year for 2–3 years once a suitable project has been identified. A number of possibilities for technical assistance were also discussed including the provision of assistance in education, and particularly English language teaching, forestry, management training and productivity. These possibilities are now being examined in detail and it is hoped that an expert on English language teaching will be visiting Tunisia in the near future to formulate firm proposals in this field.

3. It is not possible at this stage to estimate the cost of the likely programme of technical assistance programme in 1969–70 but it is hoped that a modest but worthwhile programme will be initiated in the second half of the year and continued in subsequent years.

Mr. Stratton Mills

asked the Minister of Overseas Development if he will make a statement on the recent discussion with the Tunisian Government concerning an aid programme.

Mr. Oram

Useful discussions were held which we hope will lead to a worthwhile increase in our aid programme to Tunisia.

An offer was made of a limited amount of capital aid and it is hoped that a suitable project can be agreed with the Tunisian Government. A number of possibilities for technical assistance were identified the most promising of which is English language teaching. We are
