Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total mileage of classified and non-classified roads in Wáles; and what was the average expenditure per mile in 1967–68 on their maintenance and improvement.

Mr. George Thomas

The mileage of principal and other local authority roads in 1967–68 was 17,945. Provisional expenditure figures for the year give the average expenditure per mile as £406 on improvements and £704 on maintenance. The figures include administration.

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of the total central and local government expenditure on new construction and maintenance of roads was spent in Wales in each of the years from 1958 to 1968.
