Mr. Geoffrey Wilsonasked the Minister of Transport if he will list the Government research establishments for which his Department is responsible, showing the location, date of foundation, numbers of qualified engineers and scientists and other staff, respectively, employed on 1st January, 1960, 1965 and 1969; and the cost of each establishment to public funds in the years 1959–60, 1964–65 and the estimate for 1968–69.
§ Mr. MarshMy Department is responsible for one research establishment, the Road Research Laboratory, which is located at Crowthorne, Berks, with an outstation at Thorntonhall, East Kilbride, nr. Glasgow. The Road Research Laboratory came into being in 1933 on transfer of the Ministry of Transport Experimental Station to form part of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. It again became the responsibility of my Department in April, 1965.
