HC Deb 17 February 1969 vol 778 cc34-5W
Mr. Jopling

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will give an undertaking that the bypass at Brough, Westmorland, will not be painted with double white lines as was the case on the bypass at Crackenthorpe in Westmorland.

Mr. Marsh

On the section east of the A685 where dual carriageways are planned, double white lines are not likely to be required except, possibly, as a temporary measure if one carriageway is opened to two-way traffic during the construction period. Traffic conditions might warrant double white line markings on the single carriageway section initially planned for west of the A685.

Mr. Jopling

asked the Minister of Transport whether it is proposed that double white lines should be painted on the Kendal bypass, as was done on the new stretch of the A66 at Crackenthorpe in Westmorland.

Mr. Marsh

Kendal bypass is planned as a dual carriageway road. Double white lines are not likely to be needed except, possibly, as a temporary measure if one carriageway is open to two-way traffic during the construction period.

Mr. Jopling

asked the Minister of Transport when he expects that work will start on the Kendal bypass; and when it will be completed.

Mr. Marsh

The estimated cost of this scheme has risen sharply and we are accordingly considering whether economies can be effected in its design. Until this is settled a firm starting date cannot be given. The bypass will take about two years to construct.

Mr. Jopling

asked the Minister of Transport when he expects that work will begin on the bypass at Brough, Westmorland.

Mr. Marsh

Subject to the satisfactory completion of the statutory procedures, work is expected to start during 1970.
