Mr. Peter Mills

asked the President of the Board of Trade what tariffs apply on imported meat both on the bone and boneless from Commonwealth and other overseas sources.

Mr. Dell

Fresh, chilled or frozen meat classified to tariff sub-heading 02.01(A) is free of duty when imported from the Commonwealth preference area. The rates of duty applicable to imports from other sources are as followsBeef and Veal: Boned or boneless—20 per cent. Other: Chilled—¾d. per lb. Fresh or Frozen—⅔d. per lb. Mutton and Lamb—Free. Horsemeat—5 per cent. Other—10 per cent.

Mr. Jopling

asked the President of the Board of Trade what effect the tariffs on boned and boneless meat have on the retail price of meat from Commonwealth and overseas sources.

The information for a precise estimate is not available, but I do not believe the effect is very significant.
