§ 81. Mr. Robert Howarthasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will take steps to provide funds for the establishment of alcoholism and drug addiction research foundations on the lines of those existing in Canada which investigate the whole range of problems involved and give advice on 373W preventive measures, details of which have been sent to him.
§ Mr. EnnalsI have read with interest the report which my hon. Friend has provided. The special publicly sponsored foundations described in it are clearly doing some excellent work in Canada in the field of alcoholism and drug dependence by conducting research, providing treatment and undertaking health education activities. I have no reason to suppose however that there would be advantage, as far as this country is concerned, in transferring public responsibility for these matters to foundations modelled on the Canadian pattern.
