§ Mr. Ron Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give details of the grants made to Carlisle and Cumberland from his Department each year since 1960.
§ Mr. Edward ShortFrom 1959 to April, 1967, Exchequer assistance in aid of local authorities' expenditure on education was provided as part of general grant, apart from expenditure on school meals and milk which was met by grants made by my Department. Since April, 1967, such expenditure, including expenditure on school meals and milk, has been relevant expenditure for rate support grant, which (like general grant in the earlier years) is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Minister of Housing and Local Government. Grants made by my Department in respect of school meals and milk on account of each of the financial years 1960–61 to 1966–67 were:
