HC Deb 04 February 1969 vol 777 c82W
Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he is satisfied with progress being made on the completion of the remaining sections of the road links between the Midlands and South Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. George Thomas

Nearly five miles of dual carriageway were brought into use between Mitchel Troy and Raglan on 1st February, completing the New Midlands Road between the Herefordshire border and Raglan. The contract for the Raglan-Usk section of the road should be let very shortly and work will start soon afterwards. Orders establishing the line of the final Usk-Coldra section of the road were made last month and a draft compulsory purchase order should be published at the end of this month. The complete road should be open in 1972.

Having regard to the statutory procedures that have to be followed and to other calls on the national resources, I consider the rate of progress being made on this road to be satisfactory.
