The estimates for 1958 and 1959(a) are based on the 1948 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification and for 1959 (b) and later dates on the 1958 edition.

Estimates for 1964(b) and later dates are on a revised basis of calculation and are not strictly comparable with the estimates for 1964(a).

Between June, 1966, and June, 1967, the industrial classifications of many establishments were corrected. Estimates for June, 1966, are shown on both bases, i.e. (a) excluding and (b) including the effects of these reclassifications.

The provisional estimates for June and November, 1968, may be revised when final estimates based on the count of National Insurance cards at mid-1968 become available. Provisional monthly estimates are not available for Scotland.
