Under what Statutes and subsidiary legislation the control of the immigration of aliens is exercised; for what industries, services and occupations the Ministry of Employment and Productivity issues work permits to aliens; and how many such work permits have been issued in the latest year for which statistics are available for each of the above categories of workers.
§ THE MINISTER OF STATE, MINISTRY OF TECHNOLOGY (LORD DELACOURT-SMITH)The immigration of aliens is controlled by Orders in Council made under the Aliens Restriction Acts of 1914 and 1919, as renewed annually by the Expiring Laws Continuance Acts. The principal Order at present in force is the Aliens Order 1953 as amended by the Aliens Orders of 1957, 1960, 1964, 1967, 1968 and 1969. Work permits are dealt with under Article 4(1)(b) of the Aliens Order 1953. They are issued in response to individual applications by employers in all industries, provided no suitable British labour is available and the terms and conditions of the job are 1098WA satisfactory. In 1968 a total of 62,267 work permits (including permissions given in respect of aliens already in this country) were issued in the following categories.
