HC Deb 11 December 1969 vol 793 cc149-50W
38. Mr. Ashton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average salary of male teachers in England; and what is the average salary of teachers in Nottinghamshire.

Miss Lestor

In 1968 the average salaries of men school teachers in England and Nottinghamshire, respectively, were £1,642 and £1,615. I estimate that the pay settlement in April of this year Will have raised these levels to about £1,760 and £1,730.

Mr. R. C. Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the progress of the Burnham negotiations on teachers' pay.

Mr. Edward Short

I refer my hon. Friend to my statement on 2nd December in reply to the private notice Question of the hon. Member for Finchley (Mrs. Thatcher).—[Vol. 792, c. 1301–4.]

Mr. Cordle

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what increase has been made in teachers' salaries since 1960; and how this compares with the increase in the national average wage since that date;

(2) what increase has been made in teachers' salaries since 1964; and how this compares with the increase in the national average wage since that date.

Miss Lestor

Increases in teachers' salaries, in comparison with the national increase in average weekly earnings, may be expressed as follows:—

Teachers' salaries (Men and women)* Average weekly earnings
Men Women
April, 1960 100 100 100
April, 1964 122.6 124.9 121.6
April, 1969 158.6 169.5 161.8

NOTES:

* No account is taken of the last stage of the introduction of equal pay in 1961. The improvement in the salaries of women teachers is therefore slightly understated.
