HC Deb 11 December 1969 vol 793 cc166-7W
Mr. Oakes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will extend the visa of Mr. Christopher Nwanaga, a Biafran student remanded at Risley Remand Centre, to allow him to continue his studies in this country.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

Mr. Nwanaga was admitted in 1966 for 12 months as a student. He overstayed for 2 years without seeking an extension of stay, gave up his studies and took full-time employment. On 14th October he was convicted of breach of his conditions of admission and recommended for deportation by Manchester City magistrates court. After full consideration of all the relevant circumstances, including the question whether return to Nigeria would be a hazard for Mr. Nwanaga, my right hon. Friend decided to give effect to the recommendation of the court and signed a deportation order on 12th November. Further representations were then received and considered, but they disclose no proper grounds for failing to give effect to the recommendation of the court and arrangements will now be made for Mr. Nwanaga's departure.
