HC Deb 11 December 1969 vol 793 c169W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity whether she will give for the longest and most convenient stated period of time details of the number of cases where she has, in accordance with her policy of assisting to raise the pay of the lower-paid workers, taken positive action to increase the pay of these categories of workers, nationally and in the employ of her Department.

Mr. Harold Walker

Positive action to increase the pay of low paid workers can only be taken by employers and unions. The Government has encouraged and will continue to encourage such action by making special provision for increases to low paid workers in the White Papers on prices and incomes policy. The pay of civil servants is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Minister for the Civil Service.
