HC Deb 09 December 1969 vol 793 c78W
95. Mr. Wolrige-Gordon

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by what percentage rates and taxes, personal and national, have increased since December, 1964.

Mr. Taverne

Between the fourth quarter of 1964 and the second quarter of 1969, seasonally adjusted payments of taxes on income, capital and expenditure, including local rates, increased by about 66 per cent. This increase is partly attributable to increases in prices and incomes, the substitution of investments grants for investment allowances, payments of selective employment tax in respect of Government and local authority employees which also form part of government expenditure and the reduction in child allowance to offset the increase in family allowances. Figures for taxes on expenditure and local rates falling on the personal sector are not available quarterly.
