HC Deb 09 December 1969 vol 793 cc109-10W
Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications if he will introduce legislation to make it permissible for a local authority to be responsible for the cost of television licences for the aged retired pensioners in its area.

Mr. Stonehouse

I have no plans for introducing such legislation. For the reasons given in my reply of 3rd November to the hon. Member for Walthamstow, East (Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson), the Government do not consider that subsidised television licences are the right way to help people in need. A subsidy financed by ratepayers would be open to the same objections.—[Vol. 790, c. 40.]
