HC Deb 04 December 1969 vol 792 c377W
Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what steps he is taking to encourage local authorities in Wales to use slate produced in Wales for roofing purposes in future housing developments.

Mr. George Thomas

It is for local authorities themselves to decide what materials should be used for housebuilding purposes. Discretionary subsidy can be given to help towards the extra cost of using slate, provided that I am satisfied that the character of the surrounding area requires special constructional methods to be taken for its preservation and that I accept that the use of slate is necessary for that purpose.
