Mr. Speed

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the annual cost of the import deposits scheme at the 50 per cent, rate to the wine and spirit trade assuming an interest charge of 10 per cent, in the capital required to finance the deposits.

Mr. Taverne

On the assumptions postulated in the Question, the cost would be of the order of £1¼ million per annum.

Mr. Speed

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what amount of tax and revenue duty is represented in the cost of a bottle of 70 degrees proof whisky, brandy and vodka, and in a bottle of port, sherry, burgundy and hock, respectively.
