HC Deb 02 December 1969 vol 792 c230W
33. Sir T. Beamish

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will set up an interdepartmental working party to study the effects of the introduction of a value added tax and levies on agricultural imports, so that the implications of both can be publicly debated after the issue of a White Paper and before entering into a commitment to join the Common Market.

Mr. Diamond

No. An assessment of the effects of levies on agricultural imports will be included in the White Paper which the Government hope to publish in the New Year. The effects of a value added tax would depend on the rates and coverage of the tax, which are for each Common Market country to decide individually.
