HC Deb 02 December 1969 vol 792 c235W
53. Sir F. Bennett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the nature of the representations the Chairman of the Horserace Betting Levy Board made to him in September, 1969, following which he made a concession in the payment of Excise Betting Duty.

Mr. Diamond

As stated in the agreed Press notice that was issued following a meeting on 11th September the Chairman of the Levy Board brought a deputation to see my right hon. Friend the then Financial Secretary which explained the difficulties of the bookmakers and the Horserace Totalisator Board in paying the amount of this tax in two half-yearly instalments and suggested that a charge related to rateable value was basically inequitable.
