§ 45. Mr. Darlingasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he will seek to amend Part III of the Rent Act, 1965, to ensure that magistrates impose higher and uniform penalties on landlords convicted of unlawful eviction of tenants.
§ Mr. MacCollThe courts can already impose heavy penalties: a fine of up to £100 or up to six months imprisonment or both for a first offence, and a fine of up to £500 and up to six months imprisonment or both for a subsequent offence. The courts are of course wholly independent in the exercise of their powers to impose penalties for these as for other offences.
