asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average net pay of a student nurse after deductions for meals and residential accommodation.

Mr. Crossman

The annual pay of a student nurse after deductions for meals and residential accommodation, where this system of charge is still in operation, is as follows:—

£

Age under 25 on entry:
1st year of training 264
2nd year of training 294
3rd year of training 324
Age 25 or over on entry:
1st year of training 359
2nd year of training 386
3rd year of training 413
Student nurse taking psychiatric training
Age under 21 on entry:
Age 18 364
Age 19 394
Age 20 424
Age 21 or over on entry:
1st year of training 459
2nd year of training 486
3rd year of training 513

These figures are subject to increase by varying amounts for individuals for rebates of the fixed charges for certain authorised absences.

Since 1st April, 1969, revised arrangements have been introduced, where practicable, whereby nurses pay for meals as they take them. Where these arrangements are in operation deductions from pay are £106 less in each case.
